Tower Of London Installs Changing Places Toilet Facilities

The New Armouries Building at the Tower of London has installed a Changing Places toilet on site, making it the oldest public building to have such a facility in place, according to Muscular Dystrophy UK.

The building itself dates back to the middle of the 17th century, Museums+Heritage reports, with the facility featuring a ceiling hoist, non-slip floor, a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench, wash basin and a peninsular toilet with drop-down handrails.

Director of campaigns, care and support at the charity Robert Burley welcomed the news, saying it is a “much-needed step in the right direction” to make the country’s tourist attractions more accessible, helping to address the issue of exclusion that disabled people are faced with.

“Everyone has the right to use a public toilet when they need to and Changing Places toilets are a lifeline for more than a quarter of a million disabled people across the UK.

“Having access to one of the 1,524 Changing Places toilets across the country can make a world of difference for people with conditions like muscular dystrophy, ensuring greater independence and making planning days out much easier,” he went on to say.

World Toilet Day took place on November 19th and this could be just the inspiration you need to make your business more accessible, whether that’s by installing toilets and wetrooms, introducing more ramps, widening doorways, bringing in more grab rails or installing alarms to attract attention in an emergency.
