Scheme To Deliver Extra Care Living Homes

A new net zero carbon care home near Bristol offering extra care for the elderly is to be built as the first part of a major project to increase the provision of large dedicated care services in England.

FORE Partnership is joining with extra care provider Amicala to develop several 100-unit schemes across central and southern England, the first of which will be an £80 million development at the five-acre Westbury Park site north of Bristol, Construction Enquirer reports.

Based at the site of the former St Christopher’s School, it will mainly involve the redevelopment of existing buildings with new green construction methods, as well as new eco-friendly buildings.

The development will be one of several in a £300 million grand plan that will see similar homes being established in London, Brighton, Cambridge and Birmingham.

The concept of ‘extra care’ is a new one in the UK. It is designed to enable older people to be as independent as possible, but this can be increased as they get older, meaning they don’t have to move.

Such provision can ensure they are given full access to mobility facilities such as assisted bathing solutions.

Trade body Arco has noted that at present, only 0.6 per cent of UK residents live in extra care communities. This is around a tenth of the level in countries such as the US, Australia and New Zealand.

Managing director of FORE, Basil Demeroutis said: “It has been made abundantly clear as the UK has lived through the Covid pandemic that the quality of our homes has a huge impact on our health and wellbeing.” He added that this is true for older people “as much as anyone”.

FORE describes its mission statement as embodying a philosophy that “proves you can do well by doing right”. It seeks to combine new technology, environmental protection, health and wellness and building communities.
