Govt Launches Consultation On Accessible Homes

The government has announced that it is launching a consultation on accessible housing for older and disabled people to address the problem of accommodation being built that doesn’t put accessibility at the heart of the design process.

Secretary of state for housing, communities and local government Robert Jenrick explained that people are now living longer and the proportion of older people is increasing. In 2018, there were 1.6 million people over the age of 85 and this is expected to almost double to three million by 2043.

“Through considering the best route to raising accessibility standards of new homes, we will help create a society where people can live more independently and safely, with greater choice and control over their lives.

“We are taking decisive action to build the homes this country needs, including accessible homes. Alongside this consultation, we are also significantly reforming the planning system to put a much greater emphasis on design and quality,” he went on to add.

Providing appropriate housing for older and disabled people is essential to help them live safe and independent lives. It is also important to plan early in order to meet the needs of an ageing population.

The consultation is now seeking views on how to raise the accessibility standards of new homes, with the objective being that there should be sufficient suitable housing where it’s needed.
