Contractor Appointed For Carbon Neutral Retirement Village

Construction is set to start imminently on a carbon neutral retirement village in Bedfordshire, providing tailored facilities for older people in a green setting.

Legal & General Capital has appointed Wilmott Dixon to deliver the first phase of the project. This will include building 80 apartments and an assisted living block in the middle of the Millfield Green retirement village, which will be constructed at the site of a former brickworks south of Dunstable.

The assisted living block will be designed to help those with additional needs, which will be great news for those needing assisted bathing solutions.

Willmott Dixon director Michelle Cotterill said the firm is “really looking forward to working towards the construction of our first net zero retirement project and moving one step closer to meeting our ambitious sustainability targets for 2030.”

When the entire village is complete, it will feature 200 apartments and a range of facilities include a restaurant, bar, swimming pool, sauna and other leisure amenities, plus a library, hairdressing salon, bike and buggy stores.

The carbon-neutral status will be achieved by a combination of ground source heat pumps and photovoltaic cells to produce renewable energy, extra insulation and also the installation of electric charging points for cars.

In its announcement, Wilmott Dixon noted that the scheme will help “tackle a major issue laid out in the South Befordshire Local Plan”, which stipulated that 9,050 new dwellings would be required for people over 55 years of age.

Providing residences ranging from houses to care homes for older people accounts for a third of the housing construction work Wilmott Dixon carries out, worth over £100 million a year.

It notes that the design and construction methods it uses are designed to take accounts of the news of older people and those caring for them, including the “specialist equipment many care homes require”.
