Park Shows Way Forward With Accessible Toilets

A park in Peterborough has shown the way forward in caring for the needs of disabled people by ensuring it has all the adapted and easy access toilet facilities they need.

Nene Park has been highlighted by the Peterborough Telegraph as a place that has gone out of its way to offer disability-friendly facilities for local people, providing easy access and amenities at the sites run by the Nene Park Trust.

These include Ferry Meadows, Orton Meadows, Orton Mere, Woodston Reach, Thorpe Meadows and the Rural Estate. These oases of greenery and lakeside offer an enjoyable visit for all locals, but the trust has made sure wheelchair accessibility, whether to the toilet facilities or the paths, is a must.

While the paper has been running a campaign to highlight a lack of disability-friendly spaces and facilities in the city centre, it has said it is also keen to highlight instances of good practice, with Nene Park excelling in offering everyone the chance to come and enjoy the open spaces in comfort.

A statement by the trust on the issue of access said: “The trust works with a range of organisations and individuals including our own Nene Park Access Forum to improve and promote access for all at the park.”

It added that the aim is to provide “as equal access to Nene Park and its facilities and services as is practically possible” and offer an “inclusive experience for all visitors”.

The positive experience highlighted at Nene Park is in stark contrast to the lack of facilities elsewhere in the city, highlighted by the paper in its campaign.

A lack of accessible toilet facilities in the city centre has been one of the major issues raised in the campaign, which has led to the leader of the city council, Cllr Wayne Fitzgerald, pledging to review the provision of public toilet facilities in the city centre.

At present there are virtually no disabled toilets in the heart of the city, which has a population of over 183,000.
