Charity Redistributes Surplus Mobility Equipment Overseas

A home care in the Midlands has been collecting spare mobility equipment in Shropshire and has been distributing it to countries where it is in short supply.

Home Instead, which has offices in the West Midlands and Shropshire, has been collecting spare equipment and items people no longer need and passing it on to the Jacob’s Well Appeal.

Jacob’s Well then redistributes the items to places where its new users would otherwise have to struggle through life without, often in countries with little or no state security provision to help the elderly and disabled.

Speaking to the Shropshire Star, owner of Home Instead Shrewsbury, Oswestry and Ludlow, Rachael Griffiths, said: “Many of our elderly clients have medical and mobility equipment cluttering their homes because they don’t know what to do with them when they are no longer needed.”

She added: “It seems a real shame as there is nothing wrong with the equipment, and could easily be reutilised to make a real difference to someone’s life.”

Ms Griffiths noted that her own offices in Shropshire had been involved with the charity for some years, but she was “thrilled” to find that others in the firm had joined in the appeal.

It is a reminder that while it is possible to obtain mobility items like a bath hoist in the UK, this can be a lot harder in many other parts of the world, especially placed affected by war, poverty and natural disasters.

Reflecting on this, Ms Griffiths said: “We are fortunate to have the NHS, but in other countries these important supplies can be costly or worse still, not available at all.”

The Jacob’s Well Appeal sends a variety of equipment to the world’s poorer countries, with other items on its list including medical equipment, tools and building supplies and agricultural equipment.
