Mr Y approached us looking for an easy access shower. He was finding his bath had become very difficult to use, a situation that had crept up slowly, and now just wanted to replace the tub with a shower that would be easier to use.
New bathroom or new shower?
Sometimes the work we undertake for our customers involves a full bathroom refurbishment along with a new walk-in bath or shower or wet room. However, we are also approached by people who are happy enough with the rest of their bathroom; they just require the bath to be replaced with something easier to access, such as a walk-in bath or a shower with a low step, as in this case.
We are happy to work with both types of customer, and though we can do the whole room if required, we also see no need to do so if the customer is satisfied with the rest of their bathroom.
Swapping the bath with a shower
In this instance the bath was situated in an alcove, which is very common in UK bathrooms. The alcove set up lends itself well to creating a new shower area, as there is already an enclosed space that can be easily adapted to suit a shower.
The new shower set up that we created incorporated a shower seat with grab rails placed to aid entry and exit. The doors included an upright support pole (not weight bearing), strong enough to be grasped when getting in and out of the shower.
Wall cladding is an excellent low maintenance solution as it has no grout to discolour and the surface is easy to clean. Half height doors were chosen as carer assistance may be needed at a future date and the customer wished to be ready for this eventuality. This choice prevented any future inconvenience waiting for the doors to be changed to a more suitable option.
